Jim (“Zak”) Szakmary presents “A Veteran’s Reflections on the Vietnam War” at the Suffolk County Historical Society on Jan. 19 at 1 p.m.
When Szakmary signed up for a three-year enlistment with the Marine Corps in 1967, the United States was already well embroiled in the Vietnam War. A native of Queens and a college student at the time, he set off for the jungles of Southeast Asia to fight in a difficult war. During his 13-month tour, he documented his day-to-day life whenever he had access to a camera, capturing images of the Vietnamese countryside, the people he encountered, and his fellow Marines. Fifty-plus years later, he shares these images and describes his experiences.
Members are free, non-members pay $5 which includes light refreshments and admission to current exhibits.
