Enjoy a book discussion of “The Atomic City Girls” by Janet Beard on Friday, Oct. 22 at 11 a.m. at the Riverhead Free Library.
The books takes place in November 1944 and follow 18 year old June Walker. She boards an unmarked bus for Oak Ridge, Tennessee — a city that doesn’t officially exist. She joins hundreds of other girls operating massive machines with no explanation of purpose. All they know is that the machines will help win the war and that they must not ask questions or reveal anything to outsiders.
