‘Van Howell: Drawing the Line’ exhibit on display at Lyceum Gallery

November 12, 2022, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

The pen and ink illustration exhibit Van Howell: Drawing the Line will be on display at Suffolk County Community College’s Lyceum Gallery  through Friday, Nov. 18 — with a second reception to be held on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 2 to 4 p.m.

The exhibit will feature thousands of cartoons created by Howell for the Wall Street Journal, Newsday, The New York Times and the Guardian from 1980 through 2003. The cartoons portray political, literary and musical icons in a comical and often satirical way.

“I try to get to know my subjects and draw them inside out,” said Howell. “Even the trashiest celebrities and nastiest dictators may retain traces of the souls they’ve sold.”

Howell’s work has been recognized by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Society of Illustrators, the Society of News Design and as introduction to illustration in A Guide to Drawing by Meyerowitz et al. He is former member of the New York Board of the Graphic Artists Guild, Berndt Toast Gang of the National Cartoonists Society and the Australian Cartoonists Association.
