DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique poetry event titled ‘The Room Without a Roof’ where every voice is heard. This event will be held on Saturday\, Jan. 25\, 2025\, from 2 to 4 p.m. (EST) at the Riverhead Free Library. The event will be hosted by Chip Williford and Maggie Bloomfield and will feature renowned poets Hiram Larew\, Pramila Venkateswaran\, and Hawa Allan. Following the featured readings\, there will be an open mic session. \nPramila Venkateswaran\, poet laureate of Suffolk County (2013-15)\, and Walt Whitman Birthplace Long Island Poet of the Year (2011)\, is known for her numerous works including ‘Thirtha’\, ‘Behind Dark Waters’\, ‘Draw Me Inmost’\, ‘Trace’\, ‘Thirteen Days to Let Go’\, ‘Slow Ripening’\, ‘The Singer of Alleppey’\, and ‘We are Not a Museum’. Her latest books are ‘Exile is Not a Foreign Word’ and ‘Tamil Dalit Feminist Poetics’. \nHiram Larew’s most recent collection of poems\, ‘This Much Very’\, will be published early this year. He is also the founder of Poetry X Hunger\, an initiative that brings poets to the anti-hunger cause. \nHawa Allan is a lawyer and writer of cultural criticism\, fiction\, and poetry. Her debut book ‘Insurrection: Rebellion\, Civil Rights\, and the Paradoxical State of Black Citizenship’ interweaves legal history and personal narrative. \nThe event will be live and simultaneously available on Zoom. SUMMARY:Poetry Street: Live and Zoom Poetry Reading at Riverhead Free Library
DESCRIPTION:A blend of established and emerging poets will take the stage at the Riverhead Free Library on Saturday\, Oct. 26\, 2024. From 2 to 4 p.m. (EDT)\, the event will feature live readings and an open mic session\, providing a platform for every voice to be heard. The event will be hosted by Chip Williford and Maggie Bloomfield.  \nThe featured poets include: \n– Tammy Nuzzo-Morgan: Founder and president of the Long Island Poetry & Literature Repository\, publisher of The North Sea Poetry Scene Press\, and editor of Long Island Sounds and other anthologies. Nuzzo-Morgan has written six chapbooks\, a memoir\, a children’s book\, and two full-length poetry books. She was the first woman Suffolk County Poet Laureate (2009-2011) and teaches at the C W Post campus of LIU. \n– Richard Bronson: A faculty member at the Center for Medical Humanities\, Compassionate Care & Bioethics of the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. Bronson is a member of the boards of the Walt Whitman Birthplace and the Long Island Poetry Collective and served as Suffolk County Poet Laureate from 2021 to 2023. \n– Pastor Montez Johnson: An assistant pastor at Riverhead’s First Baptist Church\, in charge of outreach. Johnson works extensively and counsels in Riverhead and Yaphank. He loves to write poetry and hopes to write a play. This is his first time featuring at Poetry Street. \nThe event will be conducted both live and on Zoom simultaneously. Donations are welcomed through Venmo. The reading will be recorded and made available on the event’s website.

Currently\, Susan serves as Clark County (WA) Poet Laureate (2024-2026) and studies in the MFA Program at Pacific University. She co-hosts Poetry Street Northwest (PSNW) at Camus Library\, an offspring of Poetry Street! In 2020\, her two chapbooks were published\, Parting Gifts (Local Gems) and In Pilgrim Drag (Finishing Line Press).  \nSteve Borodkin doesn’t remember a time he hasn’t been writing- prose\, short stories\, and poetry. Steve has featured at Poetry Street in the past and we are happy to have him back this month\, reading from his new collection of poetry and prose\, My Night Sky\, due out this fall from Red Penguin Press. The book contains 35 pieces and a short story. Steve lives on the East End and is the docent for the Steinbeck property in Sag Harbor. \nBeryl R. Williams is the founder and president of the Caribbean American Poetry Association\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rich cultural heritage and diverse voices of Caribbean American poets. Born in Dominica\, the nature isle of the Caribbean\, Beryl began writing and reciting poetry during her formative years. She performs at cultural\, religious\, and special events in the U.S. and the Caribbean. Beryl’s poems have appeared in anthologies\, and two collections\, A Pebble In My Shoe and Zandoli\, will be published soon.

DESCRIPTION:Poetry Street\, the Riverhead-based open-mic venue for poetry and the spoken word\, will celebrate its 10-year anniversary at Riverhead Free Library on Saturday\, June 29\, from 2 to 4 p.m. \nPoetry Street was founded in 2014 by former Cutchogue resident Susan Dingle and Robert “Bubbie” Brown of Riverhead as part of East End Arts’ JumpstART program. Dingle\, then a ruling elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Southold\, and Brown of the First Baptist Church in Riverhead conceived Poetry Street as “an ecumenical social justice ministry\, the ‘room without a roof’ where every voice is heard.” \nPoetry Street is currently co-hosted by Chip Williford and Maggie Bloomfield.
