DESCRIPTION:Riverhead residents can safely dispose of household hazardous wastes and unwanted prescription medications free of charge at the town’s semi-annual STOP (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) Day Saturday\, Oct. 26\, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Riverhead Highway Department facility on Osborn Avenue.\n\n \n\nThe STOP program allows for the proper disposal of residential household hazardous waste\, such as: lead-based paints\, stains and varnishes\, adhesives\, paint thinners\, refrigerants\, antifreeze\, brake and other auto fluids\, fluorescent bulbs\, batteries\, aerosols\, kerosene\, mercury\, photo chemicals\, fungicides\, herbicides\, pesticides\, and e-waste (e.g. computers\, printers\, cell phones\, pagers and VCRs). Large/small appliances\, explosives\, medical waste and commercial/industrial waste are prohibited.\n\n \n\nClick here for details.\n\n \n\nIn conjunction with STOP Day\, the Riverhead CAP’s Community Coalition for Safe and Drug-Free Youth will hold a ‘Medication Take-Back’ at the same location. DESCRIPTION:Hallockville Museum Farm\, a preserved 28-acre North Fork farm homestead\, is hosting Historic Holidays at Hallockville on Sunday\, Dec. 8 from noon to 4 p.m. This event will showcase old-fashioned holiday traditions from North Fork’s past. Here’s what to expect: \n– Costumed docents will lead tours of the historic Hallock Homestead\, which will be decorated for a Victorian Christmas. They will explain why Christmas celebrations were initially banned by early East End settlers and how they eventually arrived on the North Fork\, primarily as a secular celebration. \n– The Cichanowicz Farmhouse will recreate a Polish Christmas Eve celebration from the 1930s. \n– The Hudson-Sydlowski House will host the Country Parlor Holiday Folk Art and Gift Show\, featuring exclusively handcrafted items for holiday shopping. \n– The Trubisz House will feature a charming dollhouse exhibit. \n– Outside\, there will be a demonstration and sampling of traditional bread-making\, using a wood-fired outdoor hearth. Cassandra St. George\, a traditional bread-maker\, will be leading this activity. \n– Strolling carolers will be present to add to the festive atmosphere. \n– There will also be children’s activities and refreshments. \nThe event is open to the public and admission is free. The event is sponsored in part by Suffolk County.
