DESCRIPTION:Southold Historical Museum will present a three-part winter lecture series focused on lighthouse and maritime history. \nThe series opens Feb. 26 with “Stella Prince … Her Story Continues\,” a talk by Mary Korpi\, author of “The Lady Lighthouse Keeper.” On March 26\, Cynthia Barrett\, author of “Three Sheets to the Wind\,” will present “The Nautical Origins of Everyday Expressions.” The final program\, “Women Who Kept the Lights\, 1776 to 2023\,” is scheduled for April 16 and will be presented via Zoom by Sally Snowman\, the last official lighthouse keeper in the United States\, and Jeremy D’Entremont\, historian for the U.S. Lighthouse Society and author of more than 20 books on lighthouses and maritime history. \nAll lectures begin at 1 p.m. The Feb. 26 and March 26 talks will be held at the Ann Currie-Bell House Gallery on the museum’s Maple Lane campus. The April 16 program will be held online via Zoom. \n\n\

DESCRIPTION:Southold Historical Museum will host an illustrated presentation via live Zoom with Sally Snowman\, the last official lighthouse keeper in the United States\, and Jeremy D’Entremont\, historian for the U.S. Lighthouse Society. \nThe program focuses on women lighthouse keepers of the northeastern United States\, beginning with Hannah Thomas of Plymouth\, Massachusetts\, the first female keeper on the continent. It also highlights Kate Walker of Robbins Reef in New York Harbor\, Kate Moore of Fayerweather Island in Bridgeport\, Connecticut\, and Ida Lewis of Lime Rock in Newport\, Rhode Island. \nSnowman will reflect on her 20 years as keeper of Boston Light\, America’s oldest light station\, and her retirement\, which marked the end of more than three centuries of federally appointed lighthouse keepers. \nAdmission is free. DESCRIPTION:Hallockville Museum Farm will host a presentation on the Culper Spy Ring\, the Revolutionary War-era intelligence network that operated across Long Island in support of George Washington and the Continental Army. \nFormer Newsday reporter and author Bill Bleyer will present “The True Story of the Culper Spy Ring\,” based on his book\, George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring: A History and Tour Guide. Using a PowerPoint presentation\, Bleyer will separate fact from fiction surrounding the spy ring\, including stories popularized in recent years\, such as Anna Strong’s alleged clothesline signals. \nThe program is free and open to the public.
