DESCRIPTION:The Suffolk County Historical Society is hosting a Book & Bottle Lecture on Veterans Day weekend\, titled ‘Torpedo in the Water!’ featuring Navy veteran Edward A. Sierra. The event will take place on Saturday\, Nov. 9\, 2024\, at 1 p.m. \nSierra will share his experiences from his time in the United States Navy\, where he served on a nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine. Attendees will hear about his journey from boot camp in San Diego and naval schools across the country\, to his adventure as a nuclear-power-trained electrical operator serving on the U.S.S. Billfish stationed out of New London\, Connecticut. \nEdward A. Sierra began his career in the United States Navy. He later worked as a field operator at the Hope Creek Nuclear Power Station in New Jersey\, and then as a nuclear reactor operator at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Sierra is president of the Long Island Chapter of the American Nuclear Society. He holds a bachelor’s in science from Thomas Edison State University and graduate degrees from New York Institute of Technology\, Dowling College\, and Marist College. \nThe lecture is free for members and $8 for non-members\, which includes refreshments. DESCRIPTION:The 1731 Jamesport Meeting House will host a free illustrated lecture entitled\, “Jamesport: 300+ Years of History\,” on Wednesday\, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Jamesport Meeting House\, 1590 Main Rd. (Route 25)\, in Jamesport.  \nThe lecture\, by local historian\, Richard Wines\, will present the area’s history going back to the indigenous peoples who inhabited the area before the first European settlers arrived in the early 1600s. Mr. Wines will explain how the area was previously part of Southold\, called Aquebogue\, and how the hamlet came to be renamed Jamesport. He will share fascinating facts about the hamlet’s brief service as a whaling port in the 1830s\, the hamlet’s allure as a vacation destination beginning in the 1840s with the onset of rail travel\, and amusing tidbits that will make for fun trivia knowledge. \nAdmission is free.
