The illustrated presentation will outline the history of slavery on the North Fork from the earliest settlements in New York to the abolition of slavery here in 1827. It is estimated that 550 people were enslaved on the North Fork during that time. The presenters will share these individuals’ stories\, with a focus on enslavement in the communities surrounding Hallockville Museum Farm. \nThe event will take place on Sunday\, Feb. 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Community Room at the Visitors Center of Hallock State Park Preserve. DESCRIPTION:The East End Arts Council is hosting the fifth annual MLK Portrait Project Exhibition Reception on Feb. 27\, 2025. The MLK Portrait Project\, which has been uniting the local youth community through artistic collaboration in celebration of Black History Month since 2020\, will showcase large-scale mosaic portraits of civil rights leaders. These multimedia pieces\, measuring 48” x 48”\, are created by participating Long Island high schools. Each portrait consists of 16 individual panels. The project intertwines education of American history and art\, and its gallery exhibition brings students from many districts together. This year\, the MLK Portrait Project includes work from elementary students from PS106 in Brooklyn\, under the guidance of the East End Arts Council’s Art Programming Director\, Kenneth Jackson\, who pioneered the MLK Portrait Project. The 2025 exhibition includes works from 16 schools and is held in the Lyceum Gallery at Suffolk Community College’s Eastern Campus. The event is free to attend.
