DESCRIPTION:Riverhead Free Library will host a one-day New York State Safe Boating Certification Course sponsored by Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio and offered by Safe Boating America. \nPre-registration is required\, and seating is limited. Participants must be at least 10 years old and should register online in advance and bring their paid receipt to class. A course book will be provided upon arrival. \nThe class meets New York State and U.S. Coast Guard requirements for personal watercraft operation and youth and adult boating certification\, where applicable. Instruction covers boating fundamentals and safety\, including accidents and emergencies\, boat operation\, boats and motors\, equipment\, fueling and ventilation\, navigation\, numbering and registration\, personal watercraft\, rules of the road\, safe loading and powering\, and the marine environment. \nParticipants who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate the same day. A temporary certification valid for 90 days will be issued. Adults age 18 and older must mail a $10 fee to New York State within that period to receive the permanent certification card. The state fee is waived for ages 10 to 17. \nTo receive the discounted course rate\, registrants should apply the promo code RIVERHEADLIBRARY during checkout. No discounts or refunds are available after registration.

It will end at South Jamesport Avenue. \nImmediately following the parade will be a celebration on the grounds of the George Young Community Center on South Jamesport Avenue\, with food trucks\, live music and a DJ.

DESCRIPTION:The Suffolk County Council of Scouting America and the Andrew McMorris Foundation will host the fifth annual Andrew’s Top Gun Run at EPCAL Park in Calverton\, with participants running or walking on the runway. \nThe event raises funds for scholarships and scouterships in Andrew McMorris’ memory. In September 2018\, members of Boy Scout Troop 161 were struck by a drunk driver while hiking the Greenbelt Trail; several scouts were severely injured\, and 12-year-old Andrew McMorris died from his injuries. \nOn-site registration opens at 7:30 a.m. The fun run\, open to children 12 and under\, starts at 8:30 a.m. The 5K starts at 9 a.m. Jogging strollers are welcome. The 5K is chip-timed\, and refreshments will be available for finishers. \nAwards will be given to the top three male and female finishers overall\, and to the top three male and female finishers in age groups from 1 to 10 through 85-plus. Results will be posted online after the race. \nPre-registration packet pickup is scheduled for Friday\, March 27\, from 5 to 7 p.m. on the runway.

DESCRIPTION:Author Cynthia Barrett will give a talk on the maritime origins of everyday words and phrases at Southold Historical Museum’s Maple Lane Campus. The presentation draws from her book\, “Three Sheets to the Wind: The Nautical Origins of Everyday Expressions\,” and looks at how terms such as “filibusters” and “skyscrapers” trace back to life at sea\, along with the naval history behind the phrase “turning a blind eye\,” associated with Adm. Horatio Nelson. \nBarrett will also discuss her family’s nautical connections\, including a father who served as a World War II naval officer and a great-grandfather who was a whaler from Cold Spring Harbor\, and how those stories informed her research. \nAdmission is free.
