SUMMARY:37th Annual Say NO to Drugs March
DESCRIPTION:The Riverhead Community Awareness Program\, Inc. (CAP) is hosting its 37th annual Say NO to Drugs March on Friday\, June 7\, 2024. The march\, which is a culmination of CAP’s two-year prevention program\, aims to prevent and delay underage drinking and drug use in youth. This year\, the event will be led by women’s basketball legend and Hall of Famer Sue Wicks. Wicks\, a Long Island native\, has had an illustrious basketball career and is known for her advocacy and leadership. She will be the keynote speaker at the event.  \nThe march will start at 9:30 a.m. in front of Pulaski Street School. The route will take participants south on Roanoke Avenue\, then west on Second Street past Town Hall\, returning to Pulaski Street School via Griffing and Hallett avenues. Following the march\, there will be a brief ceremony on the steps of Pulaski Street School where Wicks\, along with the Riverhead Town Board and other elected officials\, will address the students and community.  \nAfter the ceremony\, the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1\,742 will serve a picnic lunch to all students and guests. The event is not just a march\, but a community gathering to support the youth and raise awareness about the dangers of drug use.

From 1896 to 1906\, Blaché was probably the only female filmmaker in the world. Her work laid the foundation for all who make films today. \nThe series is both curated and scored by The Aquebogue Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) led by Cliff Baldwin. This unique combination of live music and silent film offers the community a new way to experience cinema. SUMMARY:Wreath Laying Ceremony for Civil War Juneteenth Veteran at Riverhead Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:The Society of the Grand Army of the Republic (SoGAR) will be honoring Mr. David Chippie\, a Black Civil War veteran\, with a wreath-laying ceremony at his gravesite. The event is set to take place on June 15\, 2024\, at the Riverhead Cemetery\, Pulaski Street. \nMr. Chippie\, born in Delaware around 1822\, enlisted in Company F\, 29th Colored Regiment\, Connecticut\, in 1863. He served as a private before being appointed as corporal. His regiment was the first to enter Richmond\, Virginia\, after the rebel capital fell and witnessed President Lincoln’s victorious tour of the city. His unit was stationed in Texas when Gen. Gordon Granger made the historic announcement\, General Order No. 3\, on June 19\, 1865\, the anniversary of which we now celebrate as Juneteenth. \nAfter his discharge in 1865\, Mr. Chippie moved to New York and worked as a cook in Long Island hotels. He passed away in Riverhead on Aug. 10\, 1898. \nThe ceremony will include a brief program to honor Mr. Chippie’s service to our nation. The Co. K\, 67th New York Infantry will serve as Honor Guard and the 6th New York Independent Battery will fire their cannon during the event. The event is free and open to all. \nSoGAR is a historical\, educational\, and patriotic organization dedicated to advancing an understanding of the Civil War. It is responsible for the restoration of the Civil War Monument on Baker Street in Patchogue and for the placement of historic roadside markers for Civil War patriots Gen. Regis deTrobriand in Sayville and Gen. Nathaniel McLean in Bellport. For more information\, visit the SoGAR website.
