The first program\, titled ‘Pioneering Women Directors 2.0’\, will screen on Friday\, June 14\, at 7:30 p.m. The program will feature several works by French director\, Alice Guy Blaché\, the first female film director at the dawn of cinema in the late 19th century. From 1896 to 1906\, Blaché was probably the only female filmmaker in the world. Her work laid the foundation for all who make films today. \nThe series is both curated and scored by The Aquebogue Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) led by Cliff Baldwin. This unique combination of live music and silent film offers the community a new way to experience cinema. SUMMARY:Wreath Laying Ceremony for Civil War Juneteenth Veteran at Riverhead Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:The Society of the Grand Army of the Republic (SoGAR) will be honoring Mr. David Chippie\, a Black Civil War veteran\, with a wreath-laying ceremony at his gravesite. The event is set to take place on June 15\, 2024\, at the Riverhead Cemetery\, Pulaski Street. \nMr. Chippie\, born in Delaware around 1822\, enlisted in Company F\, 29th Colored Regiment\, Connecticut\, in 1863. He served as a private before being appointed as corporal. His regiment was the first to enter Richmond\, Virginia\, after the rebel capital fell and witnessed President Lincoln’s victorious tour of the city. His unit was stationed in Texas when Gen. Gordon Granger made the historic announcement\, General Order No. 3\, on June 19\, 1865\, the anniversary of which we now celebrate as Juneteenth. \nAfter his discharge in 1865\, Mr. Chippie moved to New York and worked as a cook in Long Island hotels. He passed away in Riverhead on Aug. 10\, 1898. \nThe ceremony will include a brief program to honor Mr. Chippie’s service to our nation. The Co. K\, 67th New York Infantry will serve as Honor Guard and the 6th New York Independent Battery will fire their cannon during the event. The event is free and open to all. \nSoGAR is a historical\, educational\, and patriotic organization dedicated to advancing an understanding of the Civil War. It is responsible for the restoration of the Civil War Monument on Baker Street in Patchogue and for the placement of historic roadside markers for Civil War patriots Gen. Regis deTrobriand in Sayville and Gen. Nathaniel McLean in Bellport. For more information\, visit the SoGAR website.

The event is inspired by the music of ABBA\, and will feature a DJ spinning all the disco hits of the ’70s and ’80s. DESCRIPTION:Join the North Fork Environmental Council (NFEC) for their ‘Paddle What’s Left’ kayaking and shorebird sighting fundraisers this summer. These events will take place on the following dates: \n– Saturday\, June 29 at 8 a.m.\n– Saturday\, July 27 at 8 a.m.\n– Saturday\, Aug. 24 at 8 a.m. \nParticipants will meet at Orient Beach State Park (Eagle’s Neck Paddling booth). Each trip should take approximately two and a half hours. The fee is $45 per person\, which includes a kayak\, paddle\, and life jacket. If you bring your own equipment\, the fee is reduced to $25 per person. Please note\, there is also a $10 per car entrance fee at Orient Beach State Park. \nTo reserve your spot\, or for more information\, email the NFEC at office@nfec1.org. DESCRIPTION:Join the Whale Rug Hooking Workshop at Hallockville Museum Farm on June 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to learn the basics of traditional rug hooking or hone their existing skills while working on a whimsical whale named Spout. The finished project will measure approximately 5 x 12 inches. The workshop will cover not only basic good practices\, but also finishing techniques\, color planning and a little bit of history\, too. Participants will need a hook\, a frame\, and a pair of scissors. (Hooks and frames will be available for purchase if you do not have them.) A $32 materials fee is due at class for pattern on linen and pre-cut woolen fabric strips. The workshop is led by instructor Sarah McNamara. To register\, visit the Hallockville Museum Farm website.
