DESCRIPTION:The Room Without a Roof is set to host another exciting session of poetry and prose on Saturday\, April 26\, 2025. The event will take place at the Riverhead Free Library from 2 to 4 p.m. (EST)\, and will be available both live and on Zoom. The event will feature readings by Gladys Henderson\, Robin James\, and Tom House\, followed by an open mic session. \nGladys Henderson\, a beloved figure of Poetry Street\, was named the Walt Whitman Poet of the Year in 2010 and served as the poet laureate of Suffolk County from 2017 to 2019. Her book\, _Eclipse of Heaven_\, was published in 2009 by Finishing Line Press. \nTom House\, an English teacher residing in Springs\, is the president and founding director of a local nonprofit that organizes the annual Hamptons Pride Parade in East Hampton. His fiction and nonfiction stories and essays have been featured in over 40 publications since the ’90s\, including the American Review\, _New England Review_\, and the East Hampton Star. \nRobin James\, a lifelong creative\, published her first book of poetry in 2017\, drawing from her experiences with marriage\, divorce\, motherhood\, and personal growth. She currently lives in Atlanta\, Georgia\, and enjoys trail walks\, cycling\, photography\, and unwinding with a good craft beer or cup of coffee. \nThe event will be hosted by Chip Williford and Maggie Bloomfield. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique poetry event titled ‘The Room Without a Roof’ where every voice is heard. This event will be held on Saturday\, Jan. 25\, 2025\, from 2 to 4 p.m. (EST) at the Riverhead Free Library. The event will be hosted by Chip Williford and Maggie Bloomfield and will feature renowned poets Hiram Larew\, Pramila Venkateswaran\, and Hawa Allan. Following the featured readings\, there will be an open mic session. \nPramila Venkateswaran\, poet laureate of Suffolk County (2013-15)\, and Walt Whitman Birthplace Long Island Poet of the Year (2011)\, is known for her numerous works including ‘Thirtha’\, ‘Behind Dark Waters’\, ‘Draw Me Inmost’\, ‘Trace’\, ‘Thirteen Days to Let Go’\, ‘Slow Ripening’\, ‘The Singer of Alleppey’\, and ‘We are Not a Museum’. Her latest books are ‘Exile is Not a Foreign Word’ and ‘Tamil Dalit Feminist Poetics’. \nHiram Larew’s most recent collection of poems\, ‘This Much Very’\, will be published early this year. He is also the founder of Poetry X Hunger\, an initiative that brings poets to the anti-hunger cause. \nHawa Allan is a lawyer and writer of cultural criticism\, fiction\, and poetry. Her debut book ‘Insurrection: Rebellion\, Civil Rights\, and the Paradoxical State of Black Citizenship’ interweaves legal history and personal narrative. \nThe event will be live and simultaneously available on Zoom. The event will be hosted by Chip Williford and Maggie Bloomfield.  \nThe featured poets include: \n– Tammy Nuzzo-Morgan: Founder and president of the Long Island Poetry & Literature Repository\, publisher of The North Sea Poetry Scene Press\, and editor of Long Island Sounds and other anthologies. Nuzzo-Morgan has written six chapbooks\, a memoir\, a children’s book\, and two full-length poetry books. She was the first woman Suffolk County Poet Laureate (2009-2011) and teaches at the C W Post campus of LIU. \n– Richard Bronson: A faculty member at the Center for Medical Humanities\, Compassionate Care & Bioethics of the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. Bronson is a member of the boards of the Walt Whitman Birthplace and the Long Island Poetry Collective and served as Suffolk County Poet Laureate from 2021 to 2023. \n– Pastor Montez Johnson: An assistant pastor at Riverhead’s First Baptist Church\, in charge of outreach. Johnson works extensively and counsels in Riverhead and Yaphank. He loves to write poetry and hopes to write a play. This is his first time featuring at Poetry Street. \nThe event will be conducted both live and on Zoom simultaneously. Donations are welcomed through Venmo.
