DESCRIPTION:Update: The Memorial Day ceremonies and parade are canceled due to forecast heavy rain on Monday. \nThe Riverhead Combined Veterans Committee will hold its annual Memorial Day ceremonies and parade on Memorial Day\, Monday\, May 25. \nThe Memorial Day parade will step off on Osborn Avenue at Pulaski Street at 9 a.m. and proceed south on Osborn Avenue to the World War I monument on the corner of Court and West Main streets\, where ceremonies will be held on the lawn. \nThe parade will continue east on Main Street to East Avenue\, north to St. John’s Cemetery\, and then north on Roanoke Avenue to Pulaski Street for a stop at Riverhead Cemetery en route to its final destination at the War Memorial on the lawn of the Pulaski Street School. \nThe ceremonies and parade take place rain or shine.

DESCRIPTION:The Riverhead Combined Veterans Committee will host its annual Veterans Day ceremony on Monday\, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at the War Memorial monument on the corner of West Main and Court streets in Riverhead.\n\n \n\nThe time and date of the observance marks the signing of the agreement that ended World War I — at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The agreement\, known as the armistice was signed by Germany\, the Allied countries and the United States on the morning of Nov. 11\, 1918.\n\n \n\nThe granite monument with its eternal flame is a local landmark dedicated in 1920 to the nearly 300 Riverhead men who fought in World War I — and the nine who made the ultimate sacrifice.\n\n \n\nFor more on how Riverhead celebrated the armistice and honored its World War I soldiers\, see:\n\n“With 300 native sons fighting in Europe\, Riverhead celebrated the armistice with parades\, parties and prayers.”\n\n \n\n
