SUMMARY:Sparkling Through Adversity: Depression Glass of the 1930s
DESCRIPTION:Suffolk County Historical Society will present “Sparkling Through Adversity: Depression Glass of the 1930s\,” a Spotlight Series exhibit in the Weathervane Gallery. \nThe exhibit looks at the rise of mass-produced pressed glassware during the Great Depression\, when the crystal and glassware associated with the 1920s became out of reach for many households. Visitors can see colorful dish sets and accessories known as Depression glass\, produced in dozens of patterns and hues and sold at low cost. \nOn view are pieces from the historical society’s collection\, including pastel and jewel-tone examples\, iridescent opalescent “carnival” finishes\, and a uranium glass variety. The exhibit considers how these affordable wares brought small\, everyday luxuries to tables during the 1930s. \nThe gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday\, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Regular admission applies.

SUMMARY:Book & Bottle Lecture: 'Long Island and the Legacy of Eugenics: Station of Intolerance'
DESCRIPTION:In the early 20th century\, eugenics was at the forefront of scientific discourse in the quest to understand human genetics. On Long Island and throughout the nation\, eugenicists were granted unfettered access to conduct experiments on prisoners\, psychiatric patients\, Coney Island circus performers\, and at Native American reservations–all in an effort to legitimize a false science. The origins of the eugenics movement can be found in the Eugenics Record Office\, an otherwise nondescript administrative building at Cold Spring Harbor\, Long Island\, NY\, under the direction of Charles Benedict Davenport\, from 1910 to 1939. The work conducted there directly led to the forced sterilization of thousands of American citizens\, the passage of anti-immigration laws\, and sparked a deadly global movement that directly inspired the murderous Nazi regime to commit heinous acts under the banner of eugenics. \nAuthor Mark Torres will explore the local characters\, influences\, landmarks and ghastly consequences that emanated from this small Long Island facility for decades and spread throughout the world. \nThis event will feature a Book Sale & Signing. \nMembers Free; Non-Members $8. Includes light refreshments. Registration and prepayment required. Call 631-727-2881 x100 to register. \n

SUMMARY:Book & Bottle Lecture: 'The Jews of Long Island: 1705-1918' with Author Brad Kolodny
DESCRIPTION:Join author Brad Kolodny at the Suffolk County Historical Society for an enlightening lecture on the history of Jewish communities on Long Island. The event\, titled ‘The Jews of Long Island: 1705-1918’\, will take place on Thursday\, April 18\, 2024\, at 6 p.m. \nKolodny\, who is also the president and founder of the Jewish Historical Society of Long Island\, will share the intriguing story of how Jewish communities were established and developed east of New York City\, from Great Neck to Greenport and Cedarhurst to Sag Harbor. His narrative will include the stories of peddlers\, farmers\, and factory workers struggling to make a living\, as well as successful merchants and even wealthy industrialists like the Guggenheims. \nKolodny spent six years researching how\, when\, and why Jewish families settled and thrived on Long Island. Registration is required with non-refundable prepayment. Space is limited\, so reserve your spot by calling 631-727-2881 X100 or book on Eventbrite for a small surcharge.
