DESCRIPTION:Join us for an enlightening presentation\, “The Natural Secrets of Long Island” with naturalist John Turner. This event is a review of the plants\, animals\, and natural landscapes that make Long Island the special place it is. John Turner\, a seasoned environmental educator and advocate\, has nearly 50 years of experience in the field. He has given hundreds of talks and programs and led nature walks on a wide range of natural history and environmental topics for many organizations. \nTurner has written articles that have appeared in numerous newsletters and magazines including Defenders\, Birder’s World\, Long Island Forum\, Bird Watcher’s Digest\, Networking Magazine\, and The Conservationist. He is the author of a popular Long Island nature guide “Exploring the Other Island: A Seasonal Nature Guide to Long Island” (2nd Edition). \nTurner was co-founder of the Long Island Pine Barrens Society\, a group whose mission is to promote education\, to advocate for the protection of Long Island’s drinking water and to preserve open spaces especially in the Pine Barrens. Turner currently works as a senior policy advisor. \nThe presentation will take place on Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Naugles Barn. While the event is free\, registration is requested.

Participants will also enjoy a small bowl of beef stew served with hearty bread\, replicating the meals that would have been served on the farm generations ago. \nThe cost to attend the workshop is $40 for members and $45 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:In honor of Black History Month\, the Hallockville Museum Farm is presenting “Slavery on the North Fork.” This enlightening presentation is the result of four years of research by the North Fork Project into the history of slavery in local communities. The illustrated presentation will outline the history of slavery on the North Fork from the earliest settlements in New York to the abolition of slavery here in 1827. It is estimated that 550 people were enslaved on the North Fork during that time. The presenters will share these individuals’ stories\, with a focus on enslavement in the communities surrounding Hallockville Museum Farm. \nThe event will take place on Sunday\, Feb. 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Community Room at the Visitors Center of Hallock State Park Preserve. They will explain why Christmas celebrations were initially banned by early East End settlers and how they eventually arrived on the North Fork\, primarily as a secular celebration. \n– The Cichanowicz Farmhouse will recreate a Polish Christmas Eve celebration from the 1930s. \n– The Hudson-Sydlowski House will host the Country Parlor Holiday Folk Art and Gift Show\, featuring exclusively handcrafted items for holiday shopping. \n– The Trubisz House will feature a charming dollhouse exhibit. \n– Outside\, there will be a demonstration and sampling of traditional bread-making\, using a wood-fired outdoor hearth. Cassandra St. George\, a traditional bread-maker\, will be leading this activity. \n– Strolling carolers will be present to add to the festive atmosphere. \n– There will also be children’s activities and refreshments. \nThe event is open to the public and admission is free. The event is sponsored in part by Suffolk County.
