SUMMARY:Living history revolutionary encampment celebrating America’s birthday
DESCRIPTION:Southold Historical Museum will host a Revolutionary War living history encampment at its Maple Lane Campus\, presented by reenactors from the Third New York Regiment. The museum grounds will be set up as a period camp\, with demonstrations of what soldiers would have carried and used as they traveled to join Gen. Washington’s troops. \nThe day includes children’s games in the Bayview Schoolhouse and on the lawn\, a Hamilton sing-along in the barn\, light refreshments\, vendors\, and additional demonstrations and food tastings. The program will also feature a presentation of America’s birthday cake and a live cannon blast demonstration. \nFunding is provided by the Robert D. L. Gardiner Foundation.

To complete the challenge at this location\, participants are asked to take a selfie by the red museum sign and upload it. \nThe Long Island History Hunt includes 26 historic sites across Long Island\, with prizes including a $1\,776 grand prize\, plus museum memberships and merchandise. Challenges are outdoors and can be completed anytime. Participants can also pick up free collectible Revolutionary-themed trading cards at each location visited.

DESCRIPTION:Southold Historical Museum will host an illustrated presentation via live Zoom with Sally Snowman\, the last official lighthouse keeper in the United States\, and Jeremy D’Entremont\, historian for the U.S. Lighthouse Society. \nThe program focuses on women lighthouse keepers of the northeastern United States\, beginning with Hannah Thomas of Plymouth\, Massachusetts\, the first female keeper on the continent. It also highlights Kate Walker of Robbins Reef in New York Harbor\, Kate Moore of Fayerweather Island in Bridgeport\, Connecticut\, and Ida Lewis of Lime Rock in Newport\, Rhode Island. \nSnowman will reflect on her 20 years as keeper of Boston Light\, America’s oldest light station\, and her retirement\, which marked the end of more than three centuries of federally appointed lighthouse keepers. \nAdmission is free. DESCRIPTION:Author Cynthia Barrett will give a talk on the maritime origins of everyday words and phrases at Southold Historical Museum’s Maple Lane Campus. The presentation draws from her book\, “Three Sheets to the Wind: The Nautical Origins of Everyday Expressions\,” and looks at how terms such as “filibusters” and “skyscrapers” trace back to life at sea\, along with the naval history behind the phrase “turning a blind eye\,” associated with Adm. Horatio Nelson. \nBarrett will also discuss her family’s nautical connections\, including a father who served as a World War II naval officer and a great-grandfather who was a whaler from Cold Spring Harbor\, and how those stories informed her research. \nAdmission is free.
