The East End Arts Council is hosting the fifth annual MLK Portrait Project Exhibition Reception on Feb. 27, 2025. The MLK Portrait Project, which has been uniting the local youth community through artistic collaboration in celebration of Black History Month since 2020, will showcase large-scale mosaic portraits of civil rights leaders. These multimedia pieces, measuring 48” x 48”, are created by participating Long Island high schools. Each portrait consists of 16 individual panels. The project intertwines education of American history and art, and its gallery exhibition brings students from many districts together. This year, the MLK Portrait Project includes work from elementary students from PS106 in Brooklyn, under the guidance of the East End Arts Council’s Art Programming Director, Kenneth Jackson, who pioneered the MLK Portrait Project. The 2025 exhibition includes works from 16 schools and is held in the Lyceum Gallery at Suffolk Community College’s Eastern Campus. The event is free to attend.
