The Riverhead Free Library is hosting a free educational program titled ‘Hernia Care and Repair’ on June 12, 2025. The program, scheduled to run from noon to 1 p.m., will be led by Dr. Alexa-Rae Pesce, a specialist in general and acute surgery at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.
The session will cover various aspects of hernias, a common condition that can occur in the abdomen or groin due to a weakness or preexisting opening in the muscle or connective tissue. Dr. Pesce will discuss the different types of hernias, their causes, symptoms, and diagnosis, as well as surgical options for repair.
While most hernias are not serious, some can be, and this program aims to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the condition. The program is sponsored by Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.
