15th Annual Black History Month Celebration

Riverhead Central School District will host its 15^th annual Black History Month celebration to showcase the achievements, culture, and history of Black Americans. The district is partnering with local elected officials, community leaders, businesses, and organizations for this impactful event. Students are eager to participate, alongside their families, in continuing to build upon the meaningful lessons and activities they are currently engaging with in their classes.

The event will feature artwork by Riverhead Central School District students and reception cuisine prepared by the Riverhead High School culinary club. In addition, there will be performances by the Riverhead High School and Riverhead Middle School jazz ensembles, the Butterfly Effect Project, the Council for Unity, the First Baptist Church of Riverhead, and local entertainer Mark McLaughlin. Alethia Ford will once again serve as the mistress of ceremonies, and Peconic Bay Medical Center Director of Imaging Services Joseph Bynum will be the keynote speaker. In addition, Town of Riverhead officials and the Riverhead Administrators Association will present the prestigious Martin Luther King Jr. Award, and local community leader Robert “Bubbie” Brown will present Garfield Langhorn certificates to honored students.

The event will feature:

• Musical and dancing performances by Riverhead Central School District students and local community organizations
• Town of Riverhead officials and the Riverhead Administrators Association presenting the renowned Martin Luther King Jr. Award
• Students receiving Garfield Langhorn certificates
• Meaningful Black History Month artwork by Riverhead Central School District students
• The Riverhead High School and Riverhead Middle School jazz ensembles performing during the auditorium reception
• Local entertainer Mark McLaughlin singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing”
• The First Baptist Church of Riverhead performing a liturgical dance
• Keynote speaker Joseph Bynum delivering inspirational remarks
