NYS safe boating certification course at Riverhead Free Library

Riverhead Free Library will host a one-day New York State safe boating certification course sponsored by Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio and offered by Safe Boating America.

Pre-registration is required, and seating is limited. Participants must be at least 10 years old. The course fee is $70 with the library discount.

The class meets New York State and U.S. Coast Guard requirements for personal watercraft operation and youth and adult boating certification. Topics include boat operation, navigation, rules of the road, equipment, accidents and emergencies, fueling and ventilation, safe loading and powering, personal watercraft, and numbering and registration.

A course book will be provided at check-in. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate the same day. A temporary certification valid for 90 days will be issued. Adults age 18 and older must mail a $10 fee to New York State within the 90-day period to receive a permanent certification card. The $10 state fee is waived for ages 10 to 17.
