The 1731 Jamesport Meeting House will host a free illustrated lecture entitled, “Jamesport: 300+ Years of History,” on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Jamesport Meeting House, 1590 Main Rd. (Route 25), in Jamesport.
The lecture, by local historian, Richard Wines, will present the area’s history going back to the indigenous peoples who inhabited the area before the first European settlers arrived in the early 1600s. Mr. Wines will explain how the area was previously part of Southold, called Aquebogue, and how the hamlet came to be renamed Jamesport. He will share fascinating facts about the hamlet’s brief service as a whaling port in the 1830s, the hamlet’s allure as a vacation destination beginning in the 1840s with the onset of rail travel, and amusing tidbits that will make for fun trivia knowledge.
Admission is free. No advanced registration is required.
