The Suffolk County Historical Society is hosting a Book & Bottle Lecture on Veterans Day weekend, titled ‘Torpedo in the Water!’ featuring Navy veteran Edward A. Sierra. The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, at 1 p.m.
Sierra will share his experiences from his time in the United States Navy, where he served on a nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine. Attendees will hear about his journey from boot camp in San Diego and naval schools across the country, to his adventure as a nuclear-power-trained electrical operator serving on the U.S.S. Billfish stationed out of New London, Connecticut.
Edward A. Sierra began his career in the United States Navy. He later worked as a field operator at the Hope Creek Nuclear Power Station in New Jersey, and then as a nuclear reactor operator at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Sierra is president of the Long Island Chapter of the American Nuclear Society. He holds a bachelor’s in science from Thomas Edison State University and graduate degrees from New York Institute of Technology, Dowling College, and Marist College.
The lecture is free for members and $8 for non-members, which includes refreshments. Prepayment is required for registration and spaces are limited. To reserve a spot, call 631-727-2881 X100 or visit Eventbrite: [tinyurl.com/TorpedoEdSierra].
